Say My Name

about

My dad passed away last year on Father’s Day. He didn’t express many fears about passing on, but he did say that he was afraid he would be forgotten. This was sort of funny to those of us that knew him because once you met my dad it was hard to forget him. Someone once compared him to a bull in a china shop. Regardless, an old friend shared with him a Jewish proverb that said that people die twice: once when the physical body died, and once when a person utters your name for the last time. He assured my dad that it would be a long time before anybody said his name for the last time.

This song incorporates that notion as a refrain as well as expressing my grief over never being able to see or hear or touch my dad again. Never is a hard thing to deal with but it’s something we all have to face at some point. The lyrics for this song were written differently than our other tunes. I simply wrote what was most emotional for me to sing out loud, and I didn’t write the words down until they were finished.

lyrics

You were the first
Of us to go
You led the way
You always did

I’ll never hear
Your voice again
Feel the callouses
On your hands

The ripples on the water
Begin to fade away
The sound becomes a silence
(Say my name)

The days with you are behind me
What is left is a life
A little less than what it was before
I miss your voice
The songs you’d sing are echoing
Your spirit lives
A melody
In my memory

My children won’t
Ever know
You won’t be there
As they grow

You won’t get
To sing to them
Put on a show
A little dance

I’ll tell them all the stories
Of their Papa Bear
You’ll sing and dance in their eyes
(Say my name)

The days with you are behind me
What is left is a life
A little less than what it was before
I miss your voice
The songs you’d sing are echoing
Your spirit lives
A melody
In my memory

Take it easy
Don’t look backward
Don’t give up until it’s done

Take it easy
Go adventure
Go and get a bloody nose

The days with you are behind me
What is left is a life
A little less than what it was before
I miss your voice
The songs you’d sing are echoing
Your spirit lives
A melody
In my memory

Say my name
Say my name
Say my name
Say my name
