Westerner started recording Kali Yuga Kama Sutra in 2020. They booked a cabin out in Big Bear and spent the week bonding and writing music. What came out of that session was the first truly collaborative song they'd written together, and also the first song that they knew would be on the next album: Yesferatu.

Rather than let themselves be stymied by the quarantine, they resolved to be more productive than ever. They drew up a plan to record a new song every month, and over the next year that's what they did. Some of the songs, like Frog and Restless, were written years ago but found new life because of the quarantine. The isolation forced the band to find music they could play over live stream with a simpler set-up. They had to look back at songs that weren't yet in Westerner's catalogue, and they found that people responded really well to them.

Other songs, like Hell is Dull and Say My Name, were born out of the band's new method of working collaboratively on songs. Hell is Dull came out of a random jam session, and Say My Name from another cabin retreat. The latter song bookends the album and is a dedication to Cooper's dad who passed away from cancer in 2020.

Kali Yuga Kama Sutra will be released by Coconut Spaceship Records on August 19th, 2022.
